Flow, the key to quiet power
" Unleash your creative energy and let it flow. Relish the possibilities. "

Flow is much more than just a mindset—it's a key that opens the door to a more powerful, more fluid life.
In today’s fast-paced world, succeeding in what we set out to do is a top priority for many of us. Hungarian psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, also known as Michaeli, developed a fascinating concept called "flow."
What is Flow?
When you're in a state of flow, you're fully immersed in what you're doing. You lose track of time and reach an optimal level of performance. Michaeli discovered this phenomenon through his research in positive psychology and described it as a deeply rewarding experience. For best results, set a clear goal so you can measure your progress. The feedback is immediate, allowing you to adjust and improve your performance. You remain in control—even when facing challenges—gaining confidence and self-esteem in the process.
Athletes and artists, for example, are very familiar with this state of flow that enables them to achieve extraordinary performances. Just look at Chilly Gonzales during his record-breaking solo performance for the longest concert ever given by a solo artist.
How Can You Access Flow?
To access flow, choose activities that match your skills, spark your passion, and give you a sense of fulfillment. The idea is to find the balance between the challenge of the task and your abilities. If the task is too easy, you’ll get bored. If it’s too hard, anxiety can take over. Flow happens right at the intersection of these two extremes.
Also, eliminate distractions: find a quiet place where you can work without interruptions. Turn off your phone notifications. The more regularly you practice entering this state, the more you’ll sharpen your skills—and the easier it becomes to slip into flow.
Moreover, flow increases your well-being by bringing a deep sense of satisfaction and productivity. It’s a key driver of your sense of self-efficacy. For more on this topic, see our earlier article: “Boosting Your Sense of Personal Efficacy Increases Your Performance.”
Flow Shapes Our Professional Identity
Working in your "zone of genius" and working in a state of flow are closely linked concepts.
The “zone of genius” is a term popularized by Gay Hendricks in his book The Big Leap. It refers to the space where you naturally excel—where your talents, skills, and passions align.
I often encourage the individuals and teams I coach to regularly ask themselves: Which projects or tasks put me in a state of flow? Identifying these helps nurture your professional identity and better envision your next steps.
Recognizing your flow zones is essential to both professional success and personal fulfillment. By understanding the characteristics of this optimal performance state—and practicing it regularly—we’re better equipped to handle the challenging aspects of our work.
And you, have you clearly identified your flow zones? Have you taken the time to redefine your role to fully integrate this zone of high achievement?
